City announces traffic, security plans for Saturday event

In preparation for Saturday’s TriPride Festival and parade, the City of Johnson City notifies citizens of the following:

  • On Saturday, the Johnson City Farmers Market will move to the corner of Legion Street and State of Franklin Road.
  • A portion of downtown streets will close at noon Friday in preparation for Saturday’s parade, which begins at noon. Streets will open at the conclusion of the festival.
  • Parade spectators and festival goers will be required to enter through security access points. A list of prohibited items is attached.
  • Access to businesses along the parade route will be maintained but patrons may be required to pass through access points.
  • An area will be designated for demonstrators.

“Our priority is public safety, and we believe these measures will ensure that,” said Johnson City Police Chief Karl Turner. “As with all large events, we ask the public to partner with us in keeping our community safe. If they see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that they call 911 immediately.”

This message was posted on TriPride Organization’s website on Sept. 13 regarding what items festival attendees may and may NOT bring into the festival for security reasons. Please read carefully. Thank you.

A note about event security and restrictions…

We are committed to the safety of everyone. Our local emergency responders have been great partners and allies, and we appreciate everything they are doing to ensure a successful and safe event. A Pride event of this magnitude is new to us, to you, our community, and to those securing us. Our parade and festival are not just a handful of people hanging out in the park. 70+ vendors and over 600 parade participants including floats and cars and walkers… not to mention all of your beautiful faces…this is a big thing. So we’ve looked to events of similar magnitude for guidance. Our updated security measures are consistent with most large community or sporting events nationwide.

We understand any restriction is an inconvenience. We get it. We also understand ensuring a safe, fun, amazing experience is a top priority. It’s our commitment to you.

All officers have been instructed to use common sense and to make case by case exceptions. We ask that you be patient with them and us. We will do everything possible to accommodate everyone while ensuring safety. If you have a question or concern or need when you get there, just find a yellow shirt volunteer and a board member will work with you and security.

Here are the revised measures for general attendees. They are intended to be more accommodating:

  • All items are subject to search.
  • Small bags such as fanny packs, purses or clutches are allowed.
  • Large bags and backpacks will not be allowed. Please have transparent bags/backpacks if you have big things in tow. The JCPD will generously be providing clear bags with handles for anybody as needed.
  • Diaper bags and bags for children’s needs are allowed.
  • Medical supplies will be allowed.
  • Pre-packaged snacks such as protein bars, trail mix, and cookies will be permitted in a clear plastic bag. Snacks for toddlers, including milk, are permitted.
  • Homemade meals will not be allowed.
  • Outside beverages are not permitted. TriPride, along with many exhibitors, will be giving out free water to any who want it. We will not run out of water.
  • We encourage festival attendees to bring a blanket to sit on. Folding chairs are also allowed.
  • Call us crazy optimists, but we are expecting blue skies. But umbrellas are prohibited. In the event of rain, we will be under the Farmers Market Pavilion. And besides, you can’t have a rainbow without some water.
  • Objects that can be used as weapons will not be permitted in the event.
  • Decorative masks are prohibited (medical ones are allowed), but if you want to do some rainbow face painting, awesome!
  • Only service animals are allowed.

Note: exhibitors and parade contingencies will be contacted via email with further guidance, but these measures should not impact what you need to do to participate, as you will have your passes.

We want you to feel comfortable and relaxed and have a great time. Countless hours have gone into making this real. We appreciate all of you for being patient and understanding with us in our first year. We’re committed to you.

In Pride.
