Contact improvisation is a partnering dance form developed in the early 70s. The form does not follow steps but evolves from partners intentionally and internally following a shared spot of contact as they move. Contact improv classes are used by dancers to develop their skill in mutually giving and taking weight and to rely more fully on an immediate, intuitive sense of their and their partners’ bodies. The experience is typically meditative, immersive and active.
Participants need not be athletic or a trained dancer. Any clothing suitable for a yoga class will work for this special event.
The instructor, Mike Garrett, has studied contact improv and related work under Mark Taylor Dance (Pittsburg), Jonathan Wolken (Pilobolus) and elsewhere.
