Johnson City completed its acquisition of a 10-mile stretch known as The Tweetsie Trail. The trail was a rails-to-trails project traversing the former East Tennessee & Western North Carolina “Tweetsie” railroad between Johnson City and Elizabethton. The recreational trail along the former railroad corridor provides an opportunity for walking, hiking, running, biking etc. on a relatively flat grade in a natural Tennessean setting.

The first seven miles between Johnson City and Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton were completed in the summer of 2014 and opened on Aug. 30 with the inaugural Tweetsie Trail Trek.

The final 3-mile stretch begins at the scenic Sycamore Shoals State Park, proceeds to cozy downtown Elizabethton and continues to the end of the line, near the Betsytowne Shopping Center.
